Queen Amalia, originator of the costume.

The name Amalia refers to the type of women’s costume established by the queen of Greece, Amalia, initially as the official attire of her court. In the following years, this type of clothing, starting from the royal court, spread to urban centers in Greece and abroad and evolved into a national women’s costume.

The female costume of the court of Otto and Amalia was a romantic type garment with folklore elements, It was in the Biedermeier style and was based on the urban costume of the Peloponnese, which was also common in Athens, having a kavadi bodice and an island zipun. The dress or kavadi was made of precious fabric (stofa) and had an open bodice so that the fully embroidered fabric (neckline) of the shirt could be seen. The kontoguni (a type of vest with fur in its openings) was in dark shades and mainly velvet and gold embroidery.

On the head the unmarried women wore a kalpaki (small round cover) while the married women wore a fez with a papazi (tassel) which was made of gold threads and covered by a black veil.
